Role Overview

The Engineering Manager (Automation Systems) is responsible for leading the automation engineering team while remaining hands-on in system design, implementation, and troubleshooting of production automation systems. This role ensures high equipment availability, process stability, and continuous improvement across automated production lines.

The position works closely with Production, Manufacturing Engineering, Quality, IT/OT, and Vendors to deliver robust, scalable, and safe automation solutions.

Key Responsibilities

Technical & Hands-On Responsibilities (Core)

  • Lead design, development, and implementation of automation systems for production lines

  • Hands-on involvement in:

    • PLC programming and modification (e.g. Siemens, Rockwell, Mitsubishi, Beckhoff)

    • HMI / SCADA configuration and optimisation

    • Industrial networks (Profinet, Ethernet/IP, Modbus, OPC UA)

    • Motion control, robotics, vision systems, sensors, and actuators

  • Support production ramp-up, commissioning, FAT/SAT, and system validation

  • Lead root cause analysis (RCA) for automation-related downtime and defects

  • Drive continuous improvement in cycle time, OEE, yield, and system reliability

  • Ensure automation systems comply with safety standards (e.g. ISO 13849, IEC 61508)

Team & Project Management

  • Manage and mentor a team of Automation / Controls Engineers

  • Allocate resources and assign engineering tasks based on project priorities

  • Review automation designs, code structure, and technical documentation

  • Lead automation projects from concept → design → implementation → handover

  • Coordinate with vendors, system integrators, and machine builders

  • Ensure projects meet cost, quality, and timeline requirements

Production & Cross-Functional Support

  • Work closely with Production & Manufacturing Engineering to support daily operations

  • Provide on-site technical support during breakdowns and critical production issues

  • Interface with IT / OT teams for system integration, data connectivity, and cybersecurity

  • Support audits, customer visits, and regulatory requirements

Governance & Standards

  • Define and enforce automation standards (hardware, software, architecture)

  • Maintain system documentation, backups, and version control

  • Drive cybersecurity best practices for industrial control systems

  • Support long-term automation roadmap and digitalisation initiatives

Requirements

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical / Electronics / Mechatronics / Automation Engineering or related discipline

Experience

  • 8–12 years of experience in industrial automation / controls engineering

  • 3–5 years in a technical leadership or engineering manager role

  • Strong exposure to production or manufacturing environments

  • Proven experience managing both people and complex automation systems
