Job Description

Job Title: Technical Services Engineer (Tunneling & Waterproofing)
Salary Range: SGD 4,000 - 5,200 per month (Open for Junior role)
Location: Tuas

About the Role

We are seeking a Technical Services Engineer to act as the primary technical authority for underground construction and below-grade waterproofing projects, specifically MRT/LTA tunneling works and station box construction. You will bridge the gap between our product engineering and the job site, ensuring that specialized TBM-related chemicals, construction materials, and waterproofing systems are applied correctly, efficiently, and safely.

This role is heavily focused on on-site advisory, troubleshooting, and technical specification. While you will support the commercial team with technical data, your primary objective is ensuring project success through engineering excellence rather than sales volume.

Technical Specification & Advisory (Tunneling):

  • Drive the technical approval and specification of specialized TBM products, including soil conditioning agents (foaming agents/polymers), tail seal mastics, backfill grouts, and concrete admixtures for precast segments.

  • Engage with consulting engineers, main contractors, and precast segment manufacturers to provide expert guidance on product selection based on specific geotechnical conditions.

  • Conduct technical presentations, workshops, and lunch-and-learn sessions to educate project stakeholders on application methods, dosage optimization, and performance benefits.

Technical Specification & Advisory (Waterproofing):

  • Provide technical support for below-grade waterproofing systems in MRT stations, tunnels, and cut-and-cover structures.

  • Assist in the specification of membrane systems (PVC, TPO, HDPE, bentonite), liquid-applied membranes, crystalline waterproofing, and waterstop systems.

  • Advise on pile head treatment, construction joints, and detail remediation to ensure watertight integrity of underground structures.

On-Site Project Support & Troubleshooting:

  • Serve as the on-site technical consultant during critical tunneling phases (EPB/Slurry TBM operations) and station waterproofing installation.

  • Diagnose and resolve water ingress issues, leakage paths, and membrane installation defects in active construction environments.

  • Monitor product performance and conduct site audits to ensure application parameters are being followed; proactively identify and resolve technical issues to prevent project delays.

  • Collaborate with the internal underground engineering team to adapt product solutions for varied ground conditions (e.g., high water table, aggressive groundwater, Karstic limestone, mixed face).

Market & Technical Intelligence:

  • Monitor major underground construction tenders and MRT expansion plans to anticipate technical requirements and specification trends in the region.

  • Compile site feedback and competitive product analysis; relay technical insights to R&D and Product Management teams to support local product development and customization.

Quality Assurance & Training:

  • Assist in the commissioning of new products on-site, ensuring compliance with LTA/SGBC/BCA project specifications.

  • Provide technical training to contractor crews regarding proper handling, storage, and application of tunneling chemicals and waterproofing membranes.

Qualifications & Experience

Education:

  • Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Engineering, Construction Management, or a related technical field.

  • Senior/Professional Track: Minimum 4 years of experience in a technical services, site engineering, or applications role within the heavy civil engineering/tunneling sector, with demonstrable exposure to below-grade waterproofing systems.

  • Junior Track: Entry-level candidates with a Diploma/Degree and a strong passion for underground construction are welcome; prior internship or site experience in MRT/LTA projects or basement waterproofing is a strong advantage.

Technical Competencies

Core Specialty 1: TBM Tunneling & Ground Conditioning

  • In-depth knowledge of TBM tunneling methods, particularly Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) and Slurry TBMs.

  • Strong understanding of soil conditioning principles (foam, polymer, anti-clay agents) and muck modification.

  • Familiarity with backfill grouting systems (two-component grouts) and tail seal mastics for segmental lining.

  • Knowledge of concrete admixtures for high-performance precast tunnel segments.

Core Specialty 2: Below-Grade Waterproofing

  • Working knowledge of tunnel and basement waterproofing systems, including:

    • Sheet membranes (PVC, TPO, HDPE, FPO)

    • Bentonite geocomposite and spray-applied membranes

    • Crystalline waterproofing admixtures and slurries

    • Hydrophilic and swelling waterstops

    • Chemical injection grouts (polyurethane, acrylate) for crack sealing

  • Familiarity with LTA/SGBC waterproofing specifications and BS 8102 / SS 637 standards.

  • Understanding of pile head detailing, penetrations, and interface sealing between tunnel linings and station boxes.
