Director - Development Lead Big Data Engineering

As the Development Manager, you will oversee the delivery of end‑to‑end big data initiatives, ensuring quality engineering practices, robust architecture, and smooth delivery for mission‑critical banking platforms. You’ll collaborate closely with architects, data engineers, product owners, and client stakeholders to drive modern data capabilities across the organisation.

Roles

• Lead and mentor Big Data engineering teams working on large‑scale Hadoop‑based solutions.
• Oversee design, development, implementation, and optimisation of data pipelines and data platforms.
• Ensure effective use of Hadoop ecosystem tools such as HDFS, Hive, Spark, HBase, Oozie, Kafka, and YARN.
• Engage with banking stakeholders to understand business needs and translate them into actionable technical requirements.
• Drive modern data engineering practices, automation, CI/CD, DevOps and cloud‑aligned delivery models.
• Manage project roadmaps, delivery timelines, risks, and resource planning across multiple streams.
• Ensure high availability, performance, and security of data platforms in line with banking standards.
• Conduct code reviews, architecture assessments, and ensure best‑practice engineering standards.
• Coordinate with cross‑functional teams—architecture, security, testing, operations—to ensure seamless delivery.
• Oversee vendor interactions, manage budgets, and ensure compliance with governance and regulatory standards.

Requirements

• Proven experience as a Development Manager, Big Data Lead, or Senior Data Engineering Manager.
• Strong hands-on or leadership experience with Hadoop ecosystems and distributed data processing technologies.
• Solid understanding of banking data environments, risk & regulatory requirements, and large‑scale data workloads.
• Deep experience with:Hadoop (HDFS, YARN, Hive, HBase)Spark / Scala / PySparkKafka / streaming solutions
• Experience building and leading high‑performing engineering teams.
• Strong stakeholder management skills, especially within enterprise or banking environments.
• Demonstrated ability to manage complex delivery programs with multiple dependencies.
• Understanding of cloud data technologies (AWS, Azure, GCP) is beneficial.
• Strong problem‑solving capabilities, structured thinking, and a delivery‑focused mindset.
• Exposure to modern data platforms (Databricks, Snowflake, EMR, BigQuery, Synapse).
