Database Migration Engineer (Azure)

Role Overview

We are seeking an experienced Database Migration Engineer to support enterprise-scale database transformation initiatives involving the migration and modernization of Microsoft SQL Server and MySQL databases from on-premises environments to Microsoft Azure.

The successful candidate will be responsible for database assessment, migration planning, modernization, ETL activities, performance optimization, and post-migration support while ensuring minimal business disruption and adherence to best practices.

Key Responsibilities

• Assess, plan, and execute migration of MSSQL and MySQL databases from on-premises environments to Microsoft Azure.

• Perform database discovery, dependency analysis, and migration readiness assessments.

• Design and implement migration strategies using Azure-native services and migration tools.

• Execute database modernization initiatives, including re-platforming and optimization for cloud environments.

• Develop and support ETL processes for data migration, transformation, and validation.

• Perform database performance tuning, troubleshooting, and optimization before and after migration.

• Ensure data integrity, security, availability, and compliance throughout the migration lifecycle.

• Support cutover planning, testing, validation, and post-migration stabilization activities.

• Collaborate with application, infrastructure, and cloud teams to ensure successful migration outcomes.

• Prepare migration documentation, runbooks, and technical reports.

Required Skills & Experience

• Minimum 5 years of experience in Database Administration, Database Engineering, or Database Migration projects.

• Strong hands-on experience with:

  • Microsoft SQL Server (MSSQL)

  • MySQL

• Proven experience migrating databases from on-premises environments to Microsoft Azure.

• Strong knowledge of:

  • Azure SQL Database

  • Azure SQL Managed Instance

  • Azure Database for MySQL

  • Azure Data Migration Service (DMS)

• Experience with ETL tools, data transformation, and data validation processes.

• Strong understanding of database backup, recovery, replication, high availability, and disaster recovery.

• Experience in database performance tuning and optimization.

• Knowledge of cloud migration methodologies and modernization frameworks.

Preferred Skills

• Experience with Azure Data Factory (ADF).

• Experience with Azure Synapse Analytics.

• Exposure to DevOps, CI/CD, and Infrastructure-as-Code practices.

• Experience supporting large-scale enterprise migration programs.

• Knowledge of database security and governance best practices.

Preferred Certifications

• Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate

• Microsoft Azure Administrator Associate

• Microsoft Azure Solutions Architect Expert
